When dry, most pastes are significantly harder that most gels, making them excellent for building textural or even sculptural surfaces. Some particularly useful Golden Pastes: Molding Paste is great for building up textures. It is far more economical for this purpose than using thickly applied, unaltered, heavy bodied paints. It is also helpful for mixing with fluid acrylics to create a heavy bodied paint that is both opaque and matte. Hard Molding Paste dries to an extremely rigid surface that can be sanded and carved, either by hand or with power tools.
Because it is synthetic, its characteristics are not so limited. Although one of acrylic paint’s earliest selling points was that it dries quickly, for instance, Golden now produces a product line of acrylic paints called OPEN, with extended drying times, formulated to mimic the handling properties of oil paint.
